The Swedish Perspective on the Role of Women in Creating Gender Equality

At the January meeting of the Media Club of Ottawa members welcomed Her Excellency, Swedish Ambassador Ingrid Iremark, who spoke about “The Role of Women Journalists in Creating Gender Equality in Sweden.”

She captivated her audience with stories of achievements by Swedish women and Swedish journalists who very early had proven their independence of thought.  She spoke of the advances that had been made since women in Sweden obtained the vote - a bit later than some other European countries.  Now 50 per cent of parliamentarians are women.  She credited proportional representation with some of this success. Rather than favoring women, Sweden has a rule that if two persons have equal qualifications, the job should go to the gender that is underrepresented.  Thus this can apply to men as well as women.

Margaret Graham Awards were presented to two students - Erin Kristalyn from Algonquin College and Justine Feron from Carleton University. A third award – to a student from the University of Ottawa – will be presented at the February meeting.

Joe Banks, Coordinator, School of Media & Design of Algonquin College introduced the award-winning student Erin Kristalyn. In accepting the award, Erin said she was honoured to receive the award, which will help her finance some of her career interests.

Klaus Pohle of Carleton University introduced Justine Feron.  He admitted not to know Justine very well, but said that it was no secret that as a student she excelled in everything she undertook.  He said he regretted losing her as a journalism student, but sincerely hoped she would return to journalism after obtaining an MBA.

Her Excellency, Swedish Ambassador Ingrid Iremark, once a journalist herself, presented the awards to the students.

At the end of the meeting, professors and students posed for a photo with the Ambassador and the President of the Media Club of Ottawa.
